Advent ~ Happy Birthday, Arman ~ Pattern Blocks ~ Star of the Week

Happy Birthday, Arman!

Thanks to Gavin's mom for sharing their family Advent traditions with the class.

We worked on holiday and winter pattern block pictures.  It was cool to see how one picture could be created using different combinations of blocks.

Alex is our Star of the Week.  She would like to someday have a cat.  Her favorite food is chocolate ice cream.  She likes to go to Franklin Park Conservatory, and she likes to play with friends.
Gavin's mom will be here later today to tell us how their family celebrates Advent.  I'll post these pictures later tonight.

We read a Kwanzaa story about a frog who wanted to sing.  After reading the story, the class made frogs.

Musical Frogs

We played Heads Up, 5 Up this afternoon.  It is usually Heads Up, 7 Up, but we changed it for our class.  Everyone had fun learning the game and playing it.

Chinese Jump Rope Routines

A very cool creation from table top time.

Everyone created his or her own jump rope routine.  We started with 4 main moves and then added more.

Everyone tried out the routines that they created.

4th Grade Buddies ~ Tangrams ~ Thank You

We met with our 4th grade buddies this morning.  The buddies read their newspaper to us and helped us make dragon puppets.

We read this book and then created pictures using tangrams.

As a thank you to the dining hall staff, we drew pictures of our favorite school foods and sang them a song.  I think this really made their day!

Taylor is Star of the Week ~ Hanukkah Traditions ~ Flight to China ~ China Activities

Taylor is our Star of the Week.  His favorite food is ice cream, and he is excited about Christmas.  Someday he wants to have a sleepover.  He likes to play Legos and watch Star Wars.

Sam's mom and dad came to school to share their Hanukkah traditions.
They shared their menorah, explained about eating foods cooked in oil, and read a story.

Sam's mom is explaining how to play the dreidel game while the students eat a snack of donuts and apple juice.

We "flew" to China today.  Everyone brought their luggage, boarding pass, and passport.

The K classes gathered together for the flight.

Everyone passed through customs once we landed in China.

We practiced using chopsticks.

We made the Chinese flag.

We tried paper cutting.

We watched a Chinese jump rope video and did some of the jump rope routines.

Chinese Lanterns

We read a book about Chinese lanterns, watched a video about a man in China who makes lanterns, and then made lanterns.

Here is the book that we read.

Our lanterns are decorating our room.
